Facebook Competitor Diaspora Launches Alpha Version

Open source social networking site that promises more privacy has gone live

Social networking project Diaspora, which has recently created waves as an open source alternative to Facebook, is sending out invites to a small number of people predominantly donors to try out an alpha version of the site. Others who have signed up will be next in order of priority.

The site itself was started in April by four students from NYU's Courant Institute who wanted to come up with an open source-based social network that would address all the security and privacy concerns that plague other social sites like facebook. Diaspora is attempting to give full control of the data shared to the users by allowing them to divide their social connections into groups called Aspects according to the different roles they play in their lives. That way pre-screened selective information trickles down to the different categories of people in the network.
