Open Logic Research Spots Surge in Open Source Mobile Apps

Open source detected in majority of android apps

As a natural development arising from the popularity of smartphones, mobile applications development are at an all time high . Research analyst Juniper recently projected revenue from mobile application sales to exceed $30 billion by 2015. The widespread popularity of Google's Android has pushed software developers towards adapting open source platforms in apps that will run on multiple devices.

Now enterprise open source software support and governance solutions provider OpenLogic has announced that it has conducted a survey specifically on open source usage in mobile apps. In the 450 top applications for the iPhone, iPad and Android phones that were analyzed open source was detected in 88% of Android apps and 41% of iPhone/iPad apps. The open source licenses associated with them included GPL, Apache, MIT and BSD. GPL type licenses were found in 8% of iPhone/iPad apps and 3% of Android apps.
